Welcome to the website of the First Unitarian Congregation in Budapest!

The Hungarian Unitarian religion is the only one among the Protestant Christian religions, organized on presbyterian principles, which was founded in Hungary during Reformation. Unitarianism is not built on dogmas, but on simple principles. It is a religion professing a faith in the only one God, and teaches about Jesus, as a human being, best son of God, our teacher.

The roots of Unitarianism go back as far as the 16th century Transylvanian Kingdom. During the reign of János Zsigmond (John Sigismund), in January 1568 the Diet of Torda issued a law on the freedom of religions, a law which in its formulation as such was the first one in history. The issuing of this Act was due to the spirit of Unitarianism and can be regarded as the date of the foundation of the Unitarian Church, too. We regard as founder of the Unitarian religion Jesus, and of the Unitarian Church Dávid Ferenc (Francis David), first bishop of the Unitarians, who at the time was working as the personal minister of king János Zsigmond.

Our congregation was founded in 1881, by the Unitarian Church in Hungary, which at the time included present day Transylvania and Hungary as well, and had its headquarters in Kolozsvár. For the time being our congregation with its 1300 members is the largest member of the Unitarian Church in Hungary, headquartered in Budapest.
